Royal Mail PLC (LON:RMG) has started a parcel pick-up service across the UK, where posties will from today be able to collect parcels as well as deliver them on their daily round.

The Parcel Collect service will cost 72p per parcel on top of postage costs for up to five parcels collected from a customer’s front door or nominated safe place.

Royal Mail said the service will be available Monday to Saturday and can be booked from five days in advance up to midnight the day before, so long as customers ensure they have already paid the correct postage online to send their item or if it has a pre-paid return label attached.

The service, which has been trialled in Bristol, was made available nationwide on Wednesday.

In a statement, Nick Landon, Royal Mail’s chief commercial officer, said: “The launch of Parcel Collect is part of our commitment to continuously make our services better and more convenient.”

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, rates of online shopping have soared, with parcel companies enjoying the boost.

Last month the postal services group said parcel volumes were up 34% in the first five months of the year, although it continues to expect losses while letter volumes remain depressed, with 1.1bn fewer letters sent since the start of April this year compared to last.

Royal Mail executive chairman Keith Williams is trying to reach an agreement with trade unions to improve productivity, while the group is also awaiting the ‘user needs review’ from regulator Ofcom, which is expected any time.
